WINDOW TO THE SOUL

The medium of film is voyeuristic in nature. We are invited to passively watch from a comfortable distance with our screens. But there are those rare moments when the subject dares to look back. Suddenly there is a shift in power dynamic and one must now deal with being the subject, being the one who is looked at. There is a magical quality to the movies we love that invites us to be transported and enter an alternate state of mind. But what happens when the 4th wall is intentionally broken by a film, and how does that confrontation change the experience for the viewer? Does it create a more intimate experience, or does it just further highlight the constructed nature of the illusion? Through this project, entitled WINDOW TO THE SOUL, I explore these kinds of questions by creating a parallel between the experience of watching a film and the chaotic nature of sleep. It begins in the mental struggle that occurs when one is trying to fall asleep, and ends in the unpredictable, scrambled journey of dreams. This was also an attempt for me to gain experience in animation, a mode of filmmaking that has inspired me throughout my life but one that I have never tried up until now.
